БALKANSKY is an audio-visual art project that combines traditional Bulgarian music with electronic sound and vision. It is realized in collaboration between Ivo “Kuker” Christov and Ivan Shopov. Later on the musical legend Theodosii Spassov joined the project and nowadays, all three of them present the project live all around the world. When the project is presented as a live act it includes music performed by Theodosii Spassov, mixed with electronic sounds and beats by Ivan Shopov and interactive visuals from Ivo Christov.
Three years after their debut album “Kuker” and its huge success, БALKANSKY present their new album “ORENDA” (2012), featuring the guest musicians Yanka Rupkina (Vocal), Haig Yazdjian (Oud, Vocal), Ivan Georgiev (Kaba Bagpipe) and Milen Kirov (Piano).

NEWSWEEK: “He actually created a new musical genre.”
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: “….like a jam session between Ian Anderson and Thelonius Monk.”
BERLINER MORGENPOST: “What he manages to produce on his wooden flute is sensational.”
HOWARD ROVICS: “His work on the Kaval was nothing short of pure genius.”
CHRIS NICKSON: “….Spassov sounds like the late flutist and saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk Except Spassov plays a simple, rural shepherd’s flute.”

This is an introductory practice course in Bulgarian as a foreign language. We understand that as busy adults, our students’ time for homework and practice outside of class is limited. In this 80-minute course we will start from the basics and will practice together as we strengthen students’ knowledge of the alphabet and get comfortable with using every-day phrases. We will work on all four skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Our hope is that at the end of the semester our students will be able to read and write in Bulgarian language, to introduce themselves and other people; to speak about themselves and their environment; to talk about their daily activities and their interests. Topics may include visiting Bulgaria, how to order food and get by when in Bulgaria, as well as Bulgarian traditions, culture, history, and geographic areas. Classes may include guest instructors. No prior knowledge of Bulgarian or the Cyrillic alphabet is required for this class. If you have taken an introductory class before but you are not confident in your knowledge of the Cyrillic alphabet and your ability to sound out text in Bulgarian, this is the class for you. At the end of each class we will make suggestions for further practice at home, but we might not be covering this ‘homework’ in class, nor shall we expect you to have completed it. Although we will do our best to meet every student at their level and interest in learning Bulgarian, each student will benefit greatly from practice at home! Your progress would depend on the amount of time and effort you put into it. We are excited to join you on this journey!
Intermediate Bulgarian for Busy Adults (Group 2)
Saturdays, 4:35– 5:55 pm
This is an intermediate practice course in Bulgarian as a foreign language. Prerequisite: at least one Beginners Bulgarian class or equivalent knowledge – fluency in reading and writing in the Cyrillic alphabet, greetings and introductions, grasp of present tense verbs and their conjugations. We will start with a review of Lessons 7 and 8 in the textbook (perfective and imperfective verbs) and will move on from there. At the end of the semester, students will be able to speak about themselves and their environment in the present, past and the future; to ask questions and provide information about people, objects, and places; to talk about their daily activities and their interests. Topics may include Bulgarian history, geographic areas, traditions, and culture. Some classes may include guest instructors. We will do our best to meet every student at their level and interest in learning Bulgarian, however, your progress depends on the amount of time and effort you put into practicing outside of class. We are excited to join you on this journey!
